Name: Dr. Bill Dorfman
Profession: Cosmetic Dentist
Affiliation: Century City Aesthetic Dentistry
Location: Los Angeles, CA
What made you decide to go into the medical profession?
When I was 2 and a half, I fell down and broke my baby teeth. In fact, I hit them so hard that I knocked them back into the gums instead of knocking them out. It required me to have a lot of dental surgery. We had a really great family dentist and he helped me out a lot. He made sure my teeth grew in normal and healthy and I thought this would be a cool thing to do.
What are you most proud of as it relates your career?
I feel as though I have really helped in making people more aware of and accepting cosmetic dentistry, taking a lot of the fear away. By being on ABC’s Extreme Makeover, I was given an opportunity to really show the good side of dentistry because everything in the press was always so negative – little shop of horrors and marathon man – it wasn’t good to be a dentist. So I got a great opportunity - the first opportunity – to go on prime time TV and show all the great things that we do. At the end of the day, when people were asked what made the biggest difference in their life. They always said, their teeth. So, that really resonated with them.
What do you love the most about your job?
It is the only professions in the world that you can go to work every day and know that you are making people healthier and want to smile more.
If you weren’t in the medical profession, what would you do?
I think I would be an architect. I love architecture. So instead of building little bridges, I would build big bridges.
What is the LEAP Foundation and why did you start it?
LEAP is committed to educating young adults in the value of goal-setting, effective communication, and the power of mentorship – all of which are essential in helping our kids succeed, yet often omitted from most formal educational systems. We host an annual week-long program where the curriculum is based upon the experience of those who themselves have accomplished great success. About 20 years ago, I was asked to be a mentor of another organization. When the founder of LEAP passed away, I felt as though I couldn’t let this organization go under. So I partnered with his partner and we’ve grown from 100 kids to 500 kids this past year.
Tell us about Crown Council and Smiles for Life and your upcoming medical mission with them to the Dominican Republic.
The Crown Council is a group of 3,000 dentists that have teamed up to raise money for underprivileged children in local communities around the world. When you pay for your teeth whitening from these dental practices, you write your check directly to the Smiles for Life Foundation. We have raised ~$30 million for Smiles for Life.
We are headed to the Dominican Republic on Thursday to treat children who can’t afford dental care. We will help about 500 kids per week – it really makes a huge difference in their lives.
What is the best advice you ever got?
Never give up. Failure is not an option.
What do you do to unwind outside of work?
I work out every day. I love to waterski. I am better shape now that I was in my 20’s!
What is your favorite fruit?
Watermelon… and FIGS…together!
What do you love most about FIGS?
I have never worn scrubs because in school they were so uncomfortable but when I put on FIGS, they were so soft and cozy, almost like pajamas. They are really comfortable. I want to wear them all the time.
Who’s got the best billion dollar smile?
Brooke Burke, Katy Perry and Anne Hathaway.
