Hey guys! After over 11 years of studying medicine, I have finally completed my training and am serving the community as a board certified internal medicine physician. Although the schooling was difficult and involved a lot of blood, sweat, and tears (not to mention exposure to various other bodily fluids), I have to say it was worth it in the end. There is so much about my job that I love. I enjoy the investigative process of diagnosing and treating complex medical problems involving multiple organ systems. I love the challenge of thinking outside the box in order to diagnose rare illnesses. Most of all, I like being on the frontlines of patient care and working directly with patients and their families to help them find strength as they battle life-threatening or life-altering conditions like heart disease, cancer, and stroke.
My day-to-day life on the job is not without its difficulties. In real life, diseases are not as straightforward to evaluate as they may seem in a medical school textbook. For example, influenza and HIV can both appear very similar with initial symptoms of fever, cough, and body aches. Only through careful examination and choosing the right diagnostic tests can the correct diagnosis be made and therefore, the appropriate treatment offered to the patient. Nevertheless, the chance to relieve suffering and cure potentially devastating illnesses makes this challenge a rewarding one to tackle. I will always consider it a distinct privilege to practice medicine and feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to make this my life’s work. That's #WhyIDo.
